Laurentians Spa Skincare Experts Provide 5 Tips in Maintaining Skin Health

Spotlight-3-300x200

As the aging process of your skin can be altered significantly when treating your skin and overall health with true care, our Laurentians spa skincare experts have provided 5 simple tips that can truly benefit skin health if adopted into your daily routine.

1) Our Laurentians spa team is big on drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet!

One of the most important things you can do for your skin and overall health is to stay extremely hydrated. It is recommended that you drink approximately 8 glasses of water a day. Staying hydrated allows you to flush out all of the toxins from your body. Many recommend boiling water and adding a couple of slices of lemon and drinking this first thing in the morning before breakfast. This cleanses your body from any impurities and starts off your day on the right note.  Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins can further help you look and feel your best.

2) Moisturize your skin with organic coconut oil

Organic coconut oil is high in natural saturated fats and is one of the most benefiting all-purpose oils out there. Rub coconut oil instead of body lotion all over your body after the shower. When you use coconut oil as your primary moisturizer, everything seeping into your skin is 100% natural, unlike other over the counter moisturizers. You can find the product at a number of locations including Costco and natural/organic grocers.

3) Protect yourself from the sun

A lifetime of unprotected sun exposure can cause an early onset of wrinkles, age spots, skin cancer and a number of other issues regarding the skin. One of the best ways to prevent any of these issues is to use sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF. Many drugstores now carry sunscreen with SPF 60 and above. Moreover, you can wear sun protective clothing including sun hats and thin swimsuit cover-ups/dresses when roaming the beach or sitting by the pool with your girlfriends and family. It is also recommended that you avoid sun exposure from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm when the sun rays are at their most potent.

4) Stay clear of smoking

Next to regular unprotected sun exposure, one of the worst things you can do to your skin is to smoke cigarettes. Smoking narrows the blood vessels on the outmost layers of your skin and damages collagen and elastin, significantly speeding up the aging process. The best way to avoid the negative effects from smoking is to quit entirely.

5) Be gentle with your skin

Our skin is extremely sensitive to the touch. The tugging of the skin that is caused when shaving skin or drying it with a towel can cause damage over time. After washing or bathing, gently pat your skin dry instead of rubbing the towel along your face or body. When shaving, ensure that your skin is well lubricated with coconut oil or another shaving cream and use a sharp razor. Avoid harsh soaps as well, as many can strip away the natural oils that provide moisture.
